There are four (4) ways one making a glowing light, of the four methods; three of them would render the water undrinkable.

How To Make Glowing Water Using Highlighter:

It’s important to take note that glowing water made using this method is not drinkable and should be disposed when you’re done having fun with it.

Materials Needed:

  • Highlighter
  • Scissors (You can use a pliers or a knife as well)
  • A glass jar filled with water. (The higher the volume of water, the lower the luminescence)
  • UV light (Also called Black light)

Instruction:

Cut the highlighter using the pliers or knife. (Adult supervision may be needed here)

Carefully remove the highlighter felt using your hand or any other available tool.

Place the highlighter felt into the glass jar filled with water.

Let the ink dissolve into the water (Wait for 10 minutes ideally)

After 10 minutes, stir the water to make the ink distribution even.

Turn off the light in the room, and put on the UV light close to the glass jar and watch the water glow.

The Science Of Glowing Water:

Now that you’ve seen various methods of making glowing water, let’s look at the science behind it and hopefully learn some science lesson along the way.

The black light (UV light) emits ultraviolet rays. The tonic water is composed of quinine, while highlighter felt contains phosphor. Phosphor has a characteristic of getting excited by UV rays which in-turn leads to their illumination in the presence of UV light.
