Want to learn how to make a tornado in a bottle? Follow this guide step by step and you would make your own tornado.
Materials Needed For Making Bottle Tornado.
- Fill the bottle with water (About halfway full)
- Add about two drops of dish soap
- Add some glitters
- Cover the bottle to with the bottle cap.
- Turn the bottle over so that the top faces down.
- Spin the bottle in a loose circular motion
After spinning for few seconds you should begin to see water whirling in the center of the bottle; giving rise to a mini volcano in the bottle. Although the volcano you just made isn’t as huge as the ones you see on weather stations. The aim of this fun science experiment is to show kids what a tornado looks like and hopefully teach kids some science lessons. So let’s get down to the science lesson part.
When you spin the bottle containing water it creates a center of vortex, the water in-turn spin around the vortex as a result of centripetal force.
Let’s take a look at some of the big terms used here…
Vortex: A vortex is a region or area in a liquid in which the flow is around a particular axis.
Centripetal Force: A centripetal force is responsible for the movement of an object around a curved path. Read more
Tornado: A tornado is a rotating wild column of air in the form of a wind that touches both the earth surface and the cloud. The word cyclone and tornado are often used interchangeably.
There are three main types of tornadoes which are:
Waterspout: This type of tornado usually occurs over the surface of a large water body. They are characterized “by spiraling funnel-shaped wind current, connecting to a large cumulus or cumulonimbus cloud”
Landspout: They’re weaker form of tornado. And are not associated with mesocyclone of a thunderstorm.
Multi-Vortex Tornado: A multiple-vortex tornado is a tornado that contains several vortices rotating around, inside of, and as part of the main vortex. Read more about tornado here
Tornadoes are very dangerous wind and safety precautions should be taken when their is a warn from the government or on TV about it’s occurrence.
Although there are several other dangerous wild wind, the most common in the united states are the tornadoes and hurricane.
